I am laying behind with a good reason. To make an end to the distractions I have to write this post. Let’s say to get me back on track. I am very excited and going to share this with you before I start further writing on my novel and catching up with all my dear NaNoVidMo-fellows. Before I start I want to let you know how great it is that CraigSoup is joining NaNo again. It was a little (I underestimate) disappointment when he announced that he wouldn’t join this year. Can you imagine NaNo without him? I can, but I rather don’t.
As most of you know I flew to New York City on Monday. It was a wonderful though long trip. I stood up at 6.30 in the morning, freshed myself up, kissed my girlfriend goodbye until 7.30 and finally padded the dog before leaving to the station. Then I took a 3 hour trip by the train to Amsterdam Airport. I live on the other end of the country and as the Netherlands are a small country we only have one big airport.
Because I had an E-ticket for the plane everything went very well and fast at the airport. Only the boarding took a long time due to security controls. Everybody had to take off their shoes, except me. That made me feel a little bit like Al Bundy, but the fact that I finished the process earlier because of this eased the pain of not being allowed to put off my shoes and hold them under their noses.
The flight was one of the best I ever had. In the plane two German girls sat besides me and they were very polite, as most Germans are. This two girls were so polite that we even talked much for the next couple of hours. In fact, just when I had to go to the toilet, because I sat on the window.
When I arrived at JFK everything went well although. Whilst the guy at the security counter made a photography of me he asked if I was a man or a woman. He didn’t find the appropriate answer in the form I filled in during the flight. I told him that when I took off in Amsterdam I was a male and it didn’t change in the meantime. We laughed and he said: ‘Take care’.
As Ilaria instructed me via the e-mail I ignored the illegal cap driver and went straight ahead to the line of yellow cabs. On my way to Brooklyn I had a very nice conversation with the taxi driver. Of course one of our topics was the movie ‘Taxi Driver’ with Robert DeNiro. Funny, isn’t it standard tourist talking? However, when I arrived at Lincoln Place and rang the doorbell it was just like I was walking into the house of a neighbor I knew for many years. Crazy isn’t it?
The most hilarious thing happened today and I will never forget this, because it was a very historical moment to me: at my first visit to the US ever I had the chance to help voting for the next President. I had the permission to join Ilaria in the voting booth and operate the lever to confirm the vote for Obama. This was great. We met a lot of nice people and I am very happy to be here.
Now you know what distracted me from writing my novel so far, and now I have to catch up.
Keep connected and have fun during NaNo.
Hugs and happy writing!
Mario
